Interview with Dr. Danielle Dugat
The Center for Veterinary Health Sciences offers specialized rehabilitation for dogs and cats who are recovering from orthopedic surgery, need weight loss, or for general health and conditioning.
Rehabilitation, or physical therapy, includes a multitude of tools including the water treadmill and dry treadmill, low-level laser, therapeutic ultrasound, electrical muscle stimulation, cold and warm therapy, and therapeutic exercises specifically tailored to each patient. Just like in people, rehabilitation can dramatically benefit the healing process.
By removing the strain of gravity, the water treadmill can help animals take their first steps following paralysis from back disease. Even cats do great in the water treadmill, if the temperature is just right.
Working with you and your referring veterinarian, these services can be performed on an outpatient basis with a protocol for at-home exercises. The rehabilitation services provided by OSU often speed up a patient’s recovery, and help to get them back to their normal lives.
